Magic Unleashed

I dream of Henry Caldwell…

… the darkness of night has already set in when Henry Caldwell stops in front of Blue Manor. Henry is nervous. Max Kendrick sounded extremely angry when they spoke on the phone half an hour earlier. Max said that if he does not meet him at Blue Manor straight away, he will regret what will happen even more.

Henry opens the glove compartment and takes out a small white packet. Just in case things get hairy in there, Henry thinks as he opens the car door and walks up the stone steps. The front door is standing ajar. Henry enters. He notices the large portrait hanging in the foyer.

“Study,” a voice says from his left, breaking his gaze at the portrait.

Henry follows the voice into the study. Max is sitting behind his desk, a whiskey glass in his left hand. He looks upset.

Here we go, Henry thinks as he consciously rubs the white packet stashed in his jacket pocket. Henry takes a seat on the opposite chair, saying nothing. Max looks at Henry.

“You know what you did. I want my money back.”

Henry knows there’s no denying the truth. He still says nothing. This seems to make Max even more upset.

“I am going to expose you, you lowly criminal! I have enough evidence to put you behind bars for life!”

Max’s outburst makes Henry jump in his chair. He readjusts himself before finally answering.

“How do I know you are telling the truth? Where is this ‘so-called’ evidence you have against me?”

“Don’t you worry, Mr. Caldwell. It’s hidden somewhere safe. But believe me when I say this. I will end you. You have done enough damage to this town, and it ends now. Do you have anything you would like to say to me before I call the police? An explanation? An apology? Speak, boy!”

Henry panics. What if Max is speaking the truth? He would go away for life, that’s for sure. “I need to do something, and fast,” Henry thinks.

“Okay, okay. Let’s not be hasty, Mr. Kendrick.” Henry stands up. “Let me pour you another whiskey, and then we can respectably discuss things.”

“There is nothing respectable about this situation,” Max says loudly. He hesitates before offering his glass for a refill.

With his back to Max, Henry tears open the white packet and pours the powder into the glass, if he can pull this off, it’ll be a perfect, traceless murder. The powder dissolves quickly, and Henry takes the glass to Max.

“I took the liberty of pouring myself a glass as well; I hope you don’t mind.” he takes a huge gulp from his glass. Max does the same with his.

“I wish there was another way out of this Henry, but this is it for you. Your luck has run out.” Max finishes the last of his whiskey.

“If you’ll excuse me, I need to make a phone call.” Max reaches for the telephone situated on the desk in front of him.

“Oh no you don’t.” Henry grabs the telephone from Max and unplugs it.
